In Memoriam: Dr. Timothy J. Patterson (1957–2026)

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Brigham Young University acknowledges the passing of Dr. Timothy J. Patterson, a BYU alumnus and adjunct instructor, who passed away on April 20, 2026, at the age of 68 following a long battle with multiple sclerosis and a sudden cardiac event.

Dr. Patterson earned his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from BYU in 1982, 1983, and 1984, respectively. During his time at BYU, he was recognized for his technical ability and dedication to his studies. He later contributed to the department as an adjunct instructor.

Following his education, Dr. Patterson built a distinguished career in industry. He worked for more than 20 years at Booz Allen Hamilton and spent seven years with Lockheed Martin. He also served on the Board of Directors for Intermap Technologies. His work included contributions to aviation-related publications, and he maintained long-standing involvement with IEEE. His career reflected both technical expertise and a high level of trust, including work requiring U.S. Department of Defense clearance.

Dr. Patterson retired in 2012 due to health challenges related to multiple sclerosis. In the years that followed, he remained at home under the care of his family.

Those who knew Dr. Patterson remember his sense of humor and lighthearted personality. While teaching at BYU, he kept a cooler in his office filled with bottles of root beer. At one point, someone mistakenly reported him, not realizing the bottles were root beer. When questioned, he clarified the situation in his characteristic way by offering a root beer float.

Dr. Patterson is survived by his wife of 29 years and their 22-year-old triplets. He will be remembered by his family, friends, and those who knew him during his time at BYU and throughout his professional career.

The department extends its sincere condolences to his loved ones.
