
Andrea Eyring (MSEE 1987, BSEE 1987) was named the Honored Alumna in 2012 by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at BYU. Andrea is the founder of Eyring Systems Incorporated, established in 1996. Eyring Systems Incorporated provides specialized system and software engineering, signal analysis, and consulting services in the areas of digital telecommunications and data communications. Andrea provides system engineering, architecting support, algorithm development, data quality assessment support, and training for several companies and programs. Andrea founded Eyring Systems Incorporated shortly after the birth of her first child in part to afford herself more flexibility in raising her children.
Prior to starting Eyring Systems Incorporated, Andrea worked as a senior staff engineer at ESL. Andrea worked on several telecommunication projects including serving as the technical director for ESL’s internal research and development program in the area of digital communications. Andrea was also the lead system engineer and system architect for several programs at ESL. She also worked as a section manager and program manager.
As part of the award ceremonies in November, Andrea addressed a large group of ECE students prior to receiving her award from Dr. Michael Rice, Associate Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Andrea also puts her skills to work as a volunteer and leader in her community. Andrea currently serves as the chair for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Advisory Board at BYU. Andrea also serves as a school board member for the Bullis Charter School, the top performing elementary charter school in the state of California. Andrea has also served in various capacities in her ward and stake as well as on numerous committees at her children’s schools.
Andrea is married to Ken Smith (MSEE 1988, BSEE 1988). They are the parents of three children ages 16, 14, and 10.
