Fishing with Fraser

Cleanroom manager by day–fisherman by night. Well, make that fisherman by dusk, because that’s when the catfish bite best. Jim Fraser, a member of our staff in BYU Electrical and Computer Engineering, is being featured on KSL Outdoors for his success with catfishing in Utah Lake.

Jim has been fishing almost as long as he could walk–starting when he was about five years old. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest where he was able to catch large fish like salmon and steelhead. When he moved to Utah, catfish became his go-to.

Jim jokes that he only fishes on the days that end in “Y,” and true to form, every free Saturday he has is spent at Utah Lake where there is a large catfish population. Every year he participates in a summer catfishing competition, and last year he reeled in first place. He won the competition by half an inch with his wife in second place, and his fishing partner in third. His family enjoys eating catfish too, so they’re lucky to have such a skilled fisherman in the house.

Outside of fishing, Jim Fraser has a BA in Chemistry from BYU and an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Mexico. He has managed BYU’S clean room for the past 18 years, and loves working with the students and providing his expertise in microfabrication from years working in the industry.

You can catch Jim’s segment at 6:30 on Saturday July 19th on KSL!
