In early January, recipients of the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service took part in a career focused tour of Space Dynamics Laboratory, Hill Air Force Base, and Idaho National Laboratory. As recipients of the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service, these students are preparing for careers in public sector cybersecurity, and this trip gave them a clear view of where their skills can make a national impact.
At Space Dynamics Laboratory, students met with senior leaders, including the president of SDL, directors, and senior managers. They learned how a University Affiliated Research Center supports critical government missions and toured facilities featuring satellite hardware, a machine shop, and striking space imagery. Discussions about internships and career paths helped students see how they could move quickly from the classroom to meaningful work.
Idaho National Laboratory offered a highly interactive cybersecurity experience. Students participated in a cyber escape room, building technical confidence while working under realistic pressure. They also presented to INL cyber leaders and learned how cybersecurity efforts protect energy systems, infrastructure, and national security.
At Hill Air Force Base, students gained insight into how cyber and software engineers support Air Force operations. Tours highlighted advanced 3D printing, ongoing software projects, and an F 16 used to test new systems. Engineers and leaders shared candid advice and answered questions about future opportunities.
For students, the trip strengthened professional networks, clarified career goals, and reinforced the real world value of their BYU education. CyberCorps recipient Penelope Gilstrap shared, “This trip was an incredible opportunity not only to network with cybersecurity professionals working in government positions but also to learn more about the various ways National Labs and research centers contribute to the nation’s security efforts. I feel more prepared for internship applications and the government hiring process overall. I learned so much on this trip and became even more excited to pursue opportunities with similar federal and government affiliated organizations.”
