Ranging from automated farming robotics to a clothing-swap app, the SIOY is proving to be the center of student innovation here at BYU. Even halfway through the fall semester, students are preparing now for the final competition in the spring.

Accompanying the 2022 STEM fair in student recruitment opportunities, the annual recruitment dinner for BYU Electrical and Computer Engineering students was also recently held. Students, faculty, and employers alike met in the Wilkinson Center to make connections and assist the students of this department in finding career opportunities.

At the beginning of each BYU fall semester, the annual STEM fair is held inside the Wilkinson Center, where companies and programs set up interactive booths to focus on one thing: the students. It is at this fair that students’ careers can truly take off, and people can find the job or dream internship they were looking for.

This past week the IEEE student branch helped host the opening social event for the students, faculty, and families of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Taking place at Kiwanis Park, over 350 people came together to socialize and become familiar with others in the program. Delicious barbecue and treats were provided, and everyone left will full stomachs. The heat was intense, but pavilions and trees provided relief for all who came.

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I recently highlighted the work of Yixin Song, Benjamin Karlinsey, Shea Smith, Dr. Aaron R. Hawkins,and Dr. Shiuh-Hua Wood Chiang. Their paper, "The Digital-Assisted Charge Amplifier: A Digital-Based Approach to Charge Amplification," was selected by the journal for its high quality and promoted through its multiple media channels.

At BYU, it’s never too early to start learning about electrical and computer engineering – even if you’re in middle school! The ECEn department held its annual Chip Camp this summer, with kids from all over the country coming together to create LED frisbees, self-driving cars, and more.

Being an engineer and a mom at the same time? Many people would say it’s too challenging, if not outright impossible. But Sharisse Poff proves that with the Lord’s help and support from loved ones, the impossible isn’t just possible – it’s a blessing.

In every field of innovation and exploration, there is always someone who lays the groundwork for others to follow. Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” And in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, there is no greater giant than Dr. Brent Nelson, who retires this month.

At the Intermountain Conference on Engineering, Technology, and Computing (I-ETC) Conference held at Utah Valley University May 13-14, 2022. Students and Professionals from throughout Utah gathered to learn about current research and the best industry practices for product development, testing, deployment, and operation. The theme for the conference was Innovations & Solutions for Today’s Challenges. Around 100 papers related to this theme were submitted to the conference from undergraduate and graduate students from BYU, UVU, Utah State, U of U, Weber State, and Idaho State. Many of these students also participated in the student research poster competition.
