Faculty, students, and off-campus visitors attended Prof. Duncan Lorimer's talk Pulsars, flickers and cosmic flashes: the transient radio universe given as part of the Department Colloquium Series on 31 October 2014. Duncan, who is on the faculty at WVU, explained how star collapses give rise to neutron stars, whose strong magnetic fields and high rotation rates produce a radio phenomenon known as pulsars. Signal processing on received pulsar signals can be used to estimate mass, rotational rates, and potentially gravity waves.

Profs. Brian Jeffs and Karl Warnick hosted Duncan Lorimer.
