Internships can play a valuable role in preparing for a career in engineering. For Sharisse Bevan, a junior in Electrical Engineering at Brigham Young University, landing a job as an intern at Vivint Smart Home offered her the opportunity to learn valuable skills on the job.
Vivint Smart Home is one of the leading smart home service providers in the US, specializing in home automation and security. Sharisse currently works on a number of projects involving assembly and beta testing. “I spend a lot of time working on testing different units,” says Sharisse. “Right now we are working on improving Wi-Fi connections for cameras, which will help strengthen the connection between security cameras and their main control panels.” Interns like Sharisse are a great asset to Vivint. The improvements she and her team develop to combat potential problems during beta testing result in more user-friendly products for customers.
Sharisse also detailed a few of the things which she has had the opportunity to learn about while on the job. “One thing that I've had the chance to learn a lot about is the process of going from an idea to production. I’ve learned that there are a lot of different steps involved with that. I’ve really enjoyed being part of a team and helping with [the production] process. It’s been super interesting to learn from hands-on experiences.”
Sharisse expressed her gratitude for her experiences at Brigham Young University as well: “A lot of my learning has come from on the job training. I actually started working at Vivint before I began school at BYU. However, things I’ve learned in my classes have definitely helped me gain an understanding of the things I’ve been doing at Vivint for a while. We’ve been doing a lot of testing lately, and previously I knew how to perform the tests by completing a list of steps, but as I’ve learned things in class, I’ve been able to better understand the things that I’m testing.”
Sharisse has ambitious goals and can’t wait to see how her experiences at Vivint Smart Home will help her in her future career.
