To assist incoming students, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECEn) at BYU sponsors several efforts to ease the transition from high school to college.
Advising: The ECEn department has a full time academic advisor, Janalyn Mergist, to help students decide what classes to take. Her office is 459B in the Clyde Building (CB) and her phone number is 801-422-4013. Her email address is janalyn@ee.byu.edu. She can also make appointments for you to meet with faculty members to answer questions about your career opportunities or other matters.
Classes: During the first year, most electrical and computer engineering students will enroll in math (calculus) and physics classes along with general education and religion classes. They should also take the New Student Seminar (ECEn 191 http://newstudent.groups.et.byu.net/) in the Fall or Winter semester. This class provides an overview of the important topics within electrical and computer engineering and ten interactive activities give a first “hands on” look at these areas.
Social Life and the IEEE: There are many general activities on campus that first year students can experience. In addition, our professional society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) sponsors activities specifically for electrical and computer engineering students. These include an annual ECEn Department Barbecue and Meet Your Classmates/Faculty Pizza parties.
