Improving the Health of Mongolia One Sensor at a Time

September 09, 2019 01:31 PM
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia has been rated by Time and other organizations as the most highly polluted capital in the entire world. Because the city experiences such frigid temperatures, residents living in poorly-insulated gers use coal-burning stoves almost constantly, which causes such bad pollution. To help alleviate these conditions, BYU Engineering Capstone students designed a system to better insulate gers, allowing occupants to use electricity to heat and cook. These changes significantly decrease the amount of pollution being produced by coal burning stoves.

Insight from an Intel Intern

August 15, 2019 05:06 PM
Intel Corporation is one of the largest semiconductor chip manufacturers in the world. The Silicon Valley-based company is well-respected and many engineers would agree that working there would be a life-altering opportunity. For Stephanie Carlson, an Electrical Engineering student at BYU, her dream of working at Intel recently became a reality. Stephanie joined Intel as an Intern, working with fifty other interns and full-time employees in Oregon. “I really like it a lot,” says Stephanie. “This is my first internship ever, so it’s definitely very different than working an average minimum-wage job. It’s a lot more challenging, but also a lot more engaging and interesting. I think it’s been really good for me.”

Quantum Computing Internship at Microsoft

July 25, 2019 04:31 PM
It is safe to say that the world of academia is comfortable, or at least familiar, with Microsoft. Whether it is a college student finishing an essay at 11:58pm, a professor planning out a semester, or the mother of an elementary school student frantically throwing a science fair board together the night before it is due, Microsoft’s products save the day more times than anyone can count.

BYU Chip Camp Encourages Next-Generation of Female Engineers

July 18, 2019 11:32 AM
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, women currently hold less than 25 percent of STEM jobs. And when examined globally, that number drops even lower to less than 16 percent (https://mspoweruser.com/only-6-7-of-women-graduate-with-stem-degrees-microsoft-aims-to-change-that-with-makewhatsnext). With so many brilliant and well-educated women in the world, it’s alarming that more women do not choose to go into careers involving science, technology, engineering, and math.
