ECE Opening Social at Kiwanis Park
This past week the IEEE student branch helped host the opening social event for the students, faculty, and families of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Taking place at Kiwanis Park, over 350 people came together to socialize and become familiar with others in the program. Delicious barbecue and treats were provided, and everyone left will full stomachs. The heat was intense, but pavilions and trees provided relief for all who came.

ECEn Graduate Student and Mom: Sharisse Poff balances it all
Being an engineer and a mom at the same time? Many people would say it’s too challenging, if not outright impossible. But Sharisse Poff proves that with the Lord’s help and support from loved ones, the impossible isn’t just possible – it’s a blessing.

Dr. Brent Nelson: The (Retiring) Giant of ECEn
In every field of innovation and exploration, there is always someone who lays the groundwork for others to follow. Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” And in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, there is no greater giant than Dr. Brent Nelson, who retires this month.

Inspired by CAEDM: EE even helps you name your babies!
Hi, my name is Cadem Jeremy Mickelson and I am six and a half years old. My favorite colors are green, blue, and yellow, I have a little sister, Ruby, and my favorite food is salmon. I love technology (I got that from my dad) and I also love to cook (I got that from my mom). I can make quesadillas and scrambled eggs all by myself! I have a great memory (also from mom) and because of that, I am very good at math. I can add and multiply!

Alumni and Students gather for ECE picnic
As finals approached and anxieties rose, there was a desperate need for respite. Luckily, the ECEn department came to the rescue. Even with the threat of inclement weather, we had a great turnout at our annual Department IEEE Picnic last Thursday. Our dear secretaries looked on as the wind dispersed our flyers and swag across the pavilion. We were all grateful for the hot chocolate and sunny dispositions that kept us warm. The smoke was thick, but so were the patties that Dr. Jeffs and Dr. Beard served valiantly as grill masters.

The Language that Led to Firmware
Let’s be honest; when students graduate, they often have no idea where their lives will take them or the impact they’ll create. It couldn’t have been any different for Lynn Wheelwright, a BYU EC EN 1960s alumnus who assisted in the invention of firmware.
